This is quite remarkable because the USAF & USN have been lauding the IRST capability upgrades being added to their aircraft recently as groundbreaking and game changing. I've included a few screen captures from Lockheed Martin's corporate website IRST timeline reminding everyone that the technology made it's debut on the Grumman F-14 more than 3 decades ago. While the corporate card shows a stunning VX-23 F-14A from the NAS Patuxent River based Salty Dogs there is a D model nose pictured on the reserve.Įven though the Tomcat's IRST capability reached it's full potential with the F-14D Super Tomcat and it's AN/AAS-42 early earlier versions of the F-14A were equipped with a AN/ALR 23 which was later abandoned for Nothrop's TCS system.
